Investigation underway into fatal helicopter crash which destroyed a bus in Wollongong.

A helicopter was shot at from a distance as the bus with passengers and six crew members was being transported through Gungahlin in the Southern Highlands area in the State's west, according to Wollongong Police Detective Inspector Shane G. Larkin.

On Wednesday, a helicopter crashed into the Gungahlin bus, a three-tonne car which had been removed from the area at about 8.40pm as it travelled east on Ipply Island Road on Wednesday.

The helicopter was taken off-air by helicopter crews to assist in the investigation.

The helicopter, which had been being operated by a contractor at the time the crash occurred, broke up from the air and was heading to the property of a member of the Gungahlin Rural Fire Service for a search and rescue operation.

A woman on the bus was not seriously injured but the crew were unable to safely bring the aircraft down as it ran out of fuel and lost control, with the wreckage of the helicopter lying 30 metres south of the scene.

The helicopter, described as being about 1.2m long, was carrying the aircraft that was operating the bus, as well as passengers on the bus and a helicopter technician.

They said no one in the bus survived the crash but a large number of people were injured when the helicopter, which is likely to have been carrying about 2.7 tonnes of fuel, crashed directly into the Gungahlin bus.

All of the crew and passengers were taken to nearby community hospitals as a result of the crash.

A search operation was launched and no bodies were found.

"The vehicle was a six-tonne vehicle which was transporting a number of passengers on a large vehicle, including two or three crew members," Inspector Larkin said.

"The car was loaded with about three to four tonnes of equipment and we are working with the Transport Accident Investigation Branch to ensure that a search and rescue operation was undertaken without the risk to the public."
